Hearing
loss affects 10% of Americans. This occurs most often from excessive noise exposure.
It is also frequently due to mechanical obstructions such as ear wax and fluid/viscous
material in the middle ear.
Ear
infections are the most common cause of hearing loss in children. Hearing
loss in children usually resolves with appropriate medical or surgical intervention.
Dizziness, balance disorders and vertigo may be caused by ear
disease. Many other disorders such as diabetes, central nervous system disease,
degenerative processes such as aging and medication may also contribute to these
symptoms.
Tinnitus
or ringing of the ears is a common disorder frequently associated with hearing
loss. Although usually benign, it may be a symptom of a more serious health problem.
